この春、正確には２００３年４月２６日、私はアメリカ合衆国本土の最西北端、ニアベイを訪れた。
意外なことに、そこは、かつてMAKAHと呼ばれたアメリカインディアンの子孫達が、今も暮らす、インディ
アンリザベーションであった。
海も空もその小さな半島にも春があふれていた。静寂。風と海の音だけが静けさと沈黙を知らしめるよう
だった。私は断崖の縁に立って、空の彼方の水平線を眺めた。
此処へ私は、２００１年９月１１日以来、アメリカのテロリズムに対する戦争行為によって、撹乱され葛藤
する私自身の正義(観)を最構築するためにやってきたのです。
足下をのぞく。波がくり返し岩壁にあたっては砕けている。
そこで、そのように、アメリカは、私の目前に、ひとつの事実として終わっていた。大洋と大陸と一瞬の生
命、私ー私は自分が無意味にたたずんでいる事に気がついた。
私は深く呼吸をすい、来た道を引き返した。
その夜、モーテルの向かいの、この漁村の入江のダイナーへ食事に行った。海の眺めと地元の人々、私はあ
たりを見廻して、人々の生活の片鱗を探した。アメリカの他の場所と何の違いもない、と、自分のテーブルに
目を落とすと、アメリカの地図の上に、失われたアメリカンインディアンの部族の名前が印刷されたプレイ
ス・マットが置かれてあった。部族の名前は紙面をおおい、所どころ、リストは不完全である、と........
深甚な衝撃が私を襲った。
この展覧会の展示作品『Neah Bay』は、上述の体験から生まれたドローウィングです。
